Okay, so I just saw the movie Beowulf and have a few things to add since the last post of a few hours ago.
First, I have to say that I liked it. Though for the first few minutes I was waiting for the video game to start. Look, people, the technology is just not there to create absolutely realistic people. They get waxy complexions, their hair doesn't move right nor do their mouths. I would consider this an animation. I wonder what Robert Zemekis considers it. And if you're going to bother to use motion capture and make the characters look like the actors anyway (excpet Grendel), then why not just Skycaptain the whole thing?
But I digress.
What impressed me the most was the sense of the era I got from it. The idea that the storytelling was important to these people, sustaining them, and that these events were real and horrible to them. A hero was needed to stave off the dark. For students, I think this was a good immersion into the mindset of the people. Grendel was suitably horrific and startled all seven of us in the theatre (Inland Empire. Not a lot of folks in the area running to see Beowulf).
And I liked the nudity. We need more of it, especially with the naked men. Though it became rather comical all the gratuitous placement of swords, helmets, and shoulders to hide Beowulf's asssets. And where did Angelina Jolie's nipples disappear to? Only Wodin knows.
Yeah, go see it. The camera angles are worth the ride and the dragon...very cool. That's two movie dragons lately that are worth the price of admission: this one and two years ago with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. I'm such a dragon whore.
