Thanks, Jeri. As a new author with a first book just out, this was useful info to me.

I think your comments re the effectiveness of promotion are right on target. Still, if we don't promote our books, no one will, so I guess we have to keep plugging away.

You betcha, Allan. Literally NO ONE else is going to do it.

I couldn't agree more with DON'T give up! I'm actually on my fifth literary agent now, and for the first time I think I see a light at the end of the tunnel. This is such an excellent article! So honest, brave, smart, and well-written. Amazing that you made more self-publishing than your original advance!

    Jeri Westerson

To be clear, Savannah, I haven't made more self-publishing...yet. Last year I DID make more from all of my self-publishing efforts than my measley royalties from St. Martins, but getting a wash of money from an advance ups the income quickly. And by the way, I'm on my fourth agent, so there you are.

All this made me do is run out and buy your books. However, I already have them all, one way or another. As A matter of fact, I bought Noodle Girl today. Now I remember I think it was part of the Hallinan edited book he published for Japan's big earthquake . I now have two copies, but that is often the case. :)

    You sweetie, Lil

    Denise

Very interesting and revealing. Thank you.

Very, very interesting. And I might add that you have some traveling friends and fans (think San Miguel de Allende, Mexico) who are your excellent promoters as well. I hope that some time you will come to a PEN conference here!
